Can technology and the law mix? Depending on who you ask, cutting edge technology and the law just don’t seem to go hand in hand. Perry Mason didn’t have a Blackberry, and Matlock wrote everything he needed to know in his diary secured by his firewall jacket. As true as that may be, times are changing, and if you’re still conducting your practice the way Mason or Matlock did, then you’re wasting time and money.
Look around you, court runners are being replaced by subscriptions to Westlaw and Lexis-Nexis, and mailing your pleadings is simply archaic considering the availability of electronic options such as e-filing and fax filing. Even the authors of our Practice Book and Code of Ethics are rushing to change the rules so they reflect the way we practice law today.
