Another Irene Lesson: Courts Need Emergency Alert System

Irene has come and gone. If you weren’t lucky enough to maintain power through the storm but had court appearances scheduled for Monday morning, in addition to wondering how much of the items in the refrigerator would go bad, one question may have weighed heavily on your mind, “are the courts open on Monday?”   For me, this meant I spent a large percent of my iPhone’s battery charge refreshing the Connecticut Judicial Branch’s home page hourly for updates  on court closings or delayed openings.  Not cool. I would have...

LegalZoom Preps for IPO & Class Action Litigation

While I haven’t been able to put my finger on whether the concept is genius, predatory, or just the unauthorized practice of law, there’s no denying that LegalZoom is at the very least, attracting investors.  According to TechCrunch, LegalZoom recently raised $66 million in investments from Kleiner Perkins and Institutional Venture Partners bumping its total funding to $100 million and confirming suspicions that an IPO is definitely on the horizon. The document company that boasts its ability to provide customers with “trial tested...

LawCrossing.com: Cleaner Image or Smarter Marketing?

Without a doubt, more and more legal job seekers are finding their listings online, and more and more legal job listings sites are popping up everywhere. One company, Lawcrossing.com, came busting onto the scene in 2002 as one of the few job sites which actually charged a subscription fee to job seekers, and also proclaimed itself as the largest consolidator of legal jobs.  Over the years LawCrossing.com has had some tough critics, including the Better Business Bureau.  The BBB assigned LawCrossing.com its lowest company rating, an F. ...

Then, in late 2009, the “phone service party” ended when the CT Department of Motor Vehicle Commissioner announced that the state DMV would no longer provide...
